Little Canada council <br />opposes metro government <br />The little Canada council unanimously <br />voted Monday night to support an Arden <br />Hills resolution opposing the concept of <br />the Metropolitan council as another level <br />of government. <br />The Arden Hills resolution states that <br />the Metro council should remain an ad- <br />visory position and not seek powers to <br />control housing, planning and zoning. The <br />resolution asks that the name of the Metro <br />council be changed to the Metro Advisory <br />board and asked that the state legislature <br />set guidelines for the board which would <br />prohibit it from interfering with local <br />government. The resolution also asks that <br />ali full time personnel be eliminated. <br />Before making the motion to agree with <br />Arden Hills, Councilman Don Valento <br />said about the Arden Hills resolution, "I <br />like it, it's terrific." <br />AL FORSBERG NOMINATED <br />FOR FIRE MARSHALL <br />Al Forsberg, Little Canada fire chief <br />was voted by the fire department as their <br />nominee for the village's first fire <br />marshall. The appointment for fire <br />marshall will be made as soon as the <br />ordinance outlining his duties is drawn <br />up. <br />SOCIAL WORKER ASKS <br />MINNESOTA AVENUE <br />IMPROVEMENT <br />In a letter to the village council, <br />Ramsey county social worker Catherine <br />Wendell, that Minnesota ave. be im- <br />proved. The reason for the request is one <br />of the houses along the unimproved street <br />is a foster home for retarded and disabled <br />children. <br />The improvement of Minnesota ave. <br />would provide bus pickup for these <br />children since the foster mother who does <br />not drive. Engineer Don Carley said that <br />there had been a hearing for sewer for <br />Minnesota ave. which was opposed by <br />everyone several years ago. Carley said <br />that in his opinlion, Minnesota ave. would <br />have to be realigned because of the great <br />changes in grade on its present align- <br />ment. On a motion by Councilman <br />Richard Anderson, a feasability report <br />and a hearing was set for the ave. <br />Other hearings which were set were for <br />sanitary sewers, water and street on the <br />professed Jackson Street from Little <br />Canada rd. to Co. rd. C. A hearing for the <br />construction of water and sewer for <br />Country dr. and North Owasso blvd., <br />which would be upgraded to 9 ton roads. <br />The council also set a bearing for water on <br />Demont ave. and on the service road west <br />of Highway 35E. <br />VARIANCES GRANTED <br />Little Canada council granted <br />variances for a double bungalow for <br />former mayor Ed Loeffler on a 9400 <br />square foot pie shaped lot at 2552 <br />Edgerton st. and for a 28' by 32' garage for <br />Mr. Horner Desleuries of 2350 Jackson St. <br />The garage will house a digging machine <br />and trtrsks. <br />HOCKEY REQ <br />m Sdibert, 3i1 . rr . , appeared <br />before the council on behalf of the Little <br />Canada Recreation association and asked <br />for more hockey rinks. Seibert said the <br />association felt they needed at least two <br />more rinks to serve the needs of the <br />growing program. <br />Three locations are in consideration. <br />The first location is the St. Paul water <br />works property behind the fire hall where <br />the present rink is located. The second <br />location is also St. Paul water works <br />property across the street from the fire <br />station and the third location is at the <br />Little Canada elementary school. <br />Valenta will meet with the recreation <br />association to discuss the project. He was <br />authorized by the council to contact the <br />St. Paul Water department. Related to the <br />hockey rink proposal is a park plan also <br />proposed for St. Paul Water Works <br />property. Mayor Perry Makeeff urged the <br />planning commission to revive its studies <br />on the park plan. <br />Lions elect <br />new officers <br />The story of the North St. Paul Lions <br />new officers last week should have read: <br />Tom Sperry is the new president of the <br />North St. Paul Lions club. <br />Other officers are Tony Fratto, first <br />vice president; Ray Brenner, second vice <br />president; Ev Adams, third vice <br />president; Bob Grassi, secretary; Fred <br />Mentzer, treasurer; Rollie Harvieux and <br />Jack King- Ellison, tailtwisters; Bob <br />Weber, lion tamer; Ted Kennedy and Bill <br />Thompson, directors for two years, and <br />Bill Sandberg, outgoing president, <br />director for one year. Carry over direc- <br />tors are Ed Riege and Jim Wojahn. <br />Installation of officers will take place in <br />June. <br />NORTH ST.
