CITY OF LITTLE CANADA
RAMSEY COUNTY, MINNESOTA
Office of:
JOSEPH G. CHLEBECK, Clerk
515 Little Canada Road
Little Canada, Minn. 55117
4842177
20 November 1987
To: Little Canada City Council
From: Tom HorNath
1987 Annual Shade Tree Program Report
MAYOR
Michael Fahey
COUNCIL
Beverly ScaIze
Bill Blazoner
Rick Collova
Jim LaValle
This year I marked 128 trees on public and private property in
Little Canada. C£ these, 105 were diseased Elm Trees. All but several
of these have been cut and removed. 12 of these trees were Gak Trees
infected with Cak Wilt, and 11 were trees of various species located
on city property. Six of the Oaks are on city property and will be
taken down this winter, after the ground has frozen.
This winter I am conducting an experiment with Oak which, if
successful; will eliminate any need for chemical use around diseased
trees, or expensive root - trenching operations around trees. Currently,
mechanical root - trenching is the most successful of the two methods
used to control Oak.Vdlt and is considered to be about 8O) effective.
It is more recommended by the U of M than is Vapam soil fumigation.
It's sucess rate is lower than root - trenching. My experimental method
will be tried in all of the cities I work for - Little Canada, Maplewood,
Dellwood, Mahtomedi and Cakdale. The results from these infection sites
will be apparent in late spring or early summer of next year. If successful,
it will make Oak Wilt control less expensive and easier to control.
Next year will be the tenth year I have been involved in managing
Shade Tree Programs for local cities. I started in Little Canada in 1979.
I thank you for your past dedication and interest in preserving the
health of the trees within your city. Cver the years I have become in-
cresingly more aware of the importance people place in the value of their
trees and their strong desire to keep them alive and healthy. I believe
this program is invaluable in it's effectiveness toward achieving that
goal.
For 1988 I would like to ask for an increase in my hourly rate for
inspections from $10 /hr. to $12 /hr. This rate has not been changed for
the past several years. I would also like to ask for an increase in my
annual weed inspection pay from $300 /yr. to $500 /yr. This wage has not
changed since I began this position in 1982. I have accepted this same
position in Oakdale for next year at a rate of 3500 /yr.
Can't
Page 7
