Chlebeck
City Clerk
515 Little Canada Road
Little Canada, MN 55117
Re: Request for Railroad Grade Crossing Signals
at the Soo Line Railroad Crossing of South Owasso
Boulevard in the City of Little Canada.
Dear Mr. Chlebeck:
Your letter to the Department of Public Service has been forwarded to our
office for response. The Minnesota Department of Transportation was
given authority to handle grade crossing matters in November, 1976, when
the Department was established.
Under the Federal Highway Act of 1973, funds were appropriated for up-
grading warning devices at grade crossings with federal funds paying 90%
of the cost and the local road authority (City) assuming the remaining 10 %.
A review of the crossing by this office has determined that it does not
qualify for this program at this time.
If the City of Little Canada wishes to pursue the matter further, the City
Council should pass a resolution requesting the Commissioner of Transporta-
tion to conduct a public hearing to determine if additional warning devices
are required for the crossing and to allocate the costs thereof.
There are limited State funds available to offset a portion of the costs
allocated to the public. However, 25 to 100% of the costs could be
allocated to the City of Little. Canada. Modern automatic signal systems
cost in the area of 60 to 90 thousand dollars.
If we can be of any further assistance, please feel free to contact this
office.
Sincerely,
Robert G.
