APPENDIX 1
Gervais Shores
4/1/81
The erosion potential of the fill material is high due to its steep slopes
and lack of cover. Before any cover is applied to the fill material, the
surfaces should be smoothed to prevent runoff from concentrating as it
flaws down the slope. If vegetation is to be established, a seedbed Heist
be prepared. Final slope faces should not exceed 5070 (2:1).
A temporary cover of straw mulch should be applied inrediately at the rate
of 3500 lbs /acre If permanent vegetation cannot be established within
60 days, a temporary seeding should be applied prior to mulching as follows:
Early spring to July 1:
July 1 to October 15:
October 15 thru winter:
12 bu /acre oats
12 bu /acre rye
use mulch
Permanent vegetation may be established by seeding or sodding. Arens
where overland flow exceeds 3 fps should be sodded immediately after final
grading is complete. The sod should be laid at right angles to the slope
and staked. On slopes over 25 %, the sod may be covered with jute mesh and
pegged down to hold the sod securely. Where seeding is done a suitable
mixture for the conditions encountered and the uses anticipated may be
selected fLom the table attached. It is recommended that topsoil be
applied to areas where the sandy subsoils become exposed. Fertilizer
should be applied per soil test.
Mulch must be applied to either temporary or permanent seedings. The
mulch can be straw, applied at the rate of 3000 -4000 lbs /acre (70 -80
bales /acre), or long fibered wood cellulose applied at the rate of 2500
lbs /acre.
The straw mulch can be anchored by pressing it in with a straight set
blunt disc or by covering with a netting and stapling. The long fibered
wood cellulose comes in rolled blankets with netting. The blankets are
rolled out and stapled. Netting should be placed over any straw mulch
placed on the fill slopes and stapled.
