DNR INFORMATION
(612) 296 -6157
STATE OF
Ll V Ll V IE S LI n
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
BOX 25, CENTENNIAL OFFICE BUILDING • ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA • 55155
August 1, 1983
Joseph Chlebeck, Clerk
City of Little Canada
515 Little Canada Road
Little Canada, MN 55117
Dear Mr. Chlebeck,
FILE NO.
Your letter regarding the stench and sludge problem on Gervais Lake was
referred to me for reply.
An inspection was made of Gervaid Lake on July 22, 1983. The whole lake
was looked at along with each inlet and storm sewer for any signs of raw
sewage, sludge or any other foreign substances. No sludge or raw sewage was
found. What was found was large beds of rooted aquatic plants with filamentous
algae forming a mat over the top. The appearance of filamentous algae floating
on water is frequently mistaken for sewage or other foreign substances.
What causes the appearance of filamentous algae and what can be done about
it are frequently asked questions. What causes filamentous algae and other
aquatic problems are excessive nutrients entering and recycled in the lake.
When environmental conditions are right aquatic vegetation will grow. An
Aquatic Nuisance Control Permit has already been issued to control submerged
vegetation and filamentous algae. The permit was issued to the local home
owners group with the work to be done by the Lake Restoration Company. The
first spraying was done on June 14 -16, 1983. At this time it is not known
what chemical was used.
If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me.
DBZ:bl t
Si rely yours,
1
David B.
