Department of Administration <br />Building Codes and Standards Division <br />Adopted Rules Governing Amendments to the State Building Code Entitled Proposed <br />Optional Appendix E Automatic Fire Suppression Systems <br />Rule as Adopted <br />2 MCAR § 1.10020 Optional provisions for installation of on- premises tire suppression systems. <br />A. Purpose. This rule ainhorires optional provisions for the installation of on- premises lire suppression systems in new <br />construction. It is intended to alleviate increasing demands for additional fire suppression resources by allowing a municipality <br />to adopt the optional provisions of this rule based on its local lire suppression capabilities. <br />B. Municipal option. The sprinkler system requirements in C. may he adopted without change by a municipality. If they are <br />adopted. the requirements are applicable throughout the municipality for new buildings. addition, to buildings. and buildings for <br />which the occupancy classification is changed. <br />C. Requirements. Automatic sprinkler systems must he installed and maintained in operable condition in buildings in the <br />ocCUpanes classifications listed in I. -12. This requirement is in addition to other minimum requirements set in the state building <br />code. The height and area increases provided 4&P in sections 506 and 507 of the Uniform Building Code. as adopted in the state <br />building code tm+y be rrppkied are applicable. <br />I. Group A -I occupancies. <br />2. Group A -2 occupancies with an occupant load of 3(8) or more. <br />3.. Group A2.1 occupancies. <br />4. Group B -1 service stations with 3.000 or more gross sq. ft. of aea. not including canopies. <br />5. Group 8-1 parking garages with 5.000 or more gross sq. ft. of area. <br />6. Group B -2 offices and post - secondary classroom, with 8.500 or more gross sq. ft. of area or three or more stories in <br />height. <br />7. Group 13 -2 retail, warehouse. or manufacturing areas with2.000 or more gross sq. ft. of area or three or more stories in <br />height. <br />8. Group E -1 and E -2 occupancies with 8.500 or more gross sq. ft. in area or two or more stories in height. except for <br />minor additions that do not increase the occupant load or significantly increase the tire load. <br />9. Group E -3 occupancies with an occupant load of 30 or more. <br />10. Group H -4 occupancies with 3,000 or more gross sq. ft. of area. <br />I I. Group R -I apmnnrnl houses with 8,t0l) of more gross sq. ft. of area OF with dwelling units on three or once Doors. <br />except that when they are not required by Uniform Building Code. sections 1807 or 1907, or other provisions of the sane <br />building code. automatic sprinkler systems within dwelling units in apartment occupancies are considered Complete when <br />plot eetion is provided m all habitable rooms. Building officials. in concurrence with their fire chiefs. may accept alternate <br />systems not telly e4+ntpfy4ng which have fire protection capabilities equivalent to systems which comply with Standard 38 -1 of <br />the Uniform Building Code. <br />12.
