Chlebeck, Clerk
City of Little Canada
515 Little Canada Road
Little Canada, Minnesota 55117
Dear Mr. Chlebeck:
77‘...n7 7r?.r1
1Kii - m .1 ,
_. ti: .,
. ,
JAN 3 1935
CITY OF
LITTLE CANADA
This letter is in response to your inquiry regarding traffic problems and
plans.
Mn /DOT recognizes that operations problems exist at I -35E and Little Canada
Road. Also, the Little Canada Road bridge over I -35E is in poor shape. We
hope to develop a project to redeck and widen the bridge. Hopefully, an
additional lane could be put on the bridge. Perhaps other improvements could
also be a part of this project, such as widening Little Canada Road imme-
diately east of the bridge, and somehow improving the interchange area and
Country Drive.
All we need in order to proceed with the development of this project is money.
If and when funds become available (hopefully within the next five years) we
will be talking with you in order to develop our plans.
The I- 694/TH 61 interchange is currently under study. Mn /DOT plans to modify
this interchange to provide for all movements. A standard diamond interchange
is a probable design. Funding is an issue on this project as well. Right now
it looks as if Federal funding might be available after all of the remaining
interstate segments in Minnesota are completed or are under contract. This
would put the I- 694/TH 61 project in t'e 1986 -88 period for handing and con-
tract letting.
Mn /DOT has no plans to construct an interchange or to allow access at I -694/
35E and Edgerton Street. This "common section" of I -694 and I -35E functions
as a weaving area. The operation of this weave could be jeopardized with the
introduction of additional movements to and from Edgerton Street.
If Little Canada or any other governmental agency would be interested in con-
structing this interchange, a process does exist for analyzing such proposals.
This process is the Metropolitan Council's Metropolitan Highway Interchanges:
Criteria and a Procedure for Analyzing Proposed Changes on the Highway System
in the Metropolitan Urban Service Area. >:f this process was initiated by you
or any agency, Mn /D0f would perform detailed analyses to more specifically
assess the impacts of any proposed changes on the operation of the freeway.
Overall, the perceived traffic impacts caused by development along Edgerton
Street in Vadnais Heights might be lessened by our future project at 1 -35E/
24
.irt Equal Opportunity Employer
