Soo Line Railroad Company
June 6, 1988
Mr. Michael Fahey, Mayor
City of Little Canada
515 E. Little Canada Road
Little Canada, MN 55113
Dear Mr. Fahey,
Soo Line Building
Box 530
Minneapolis, Minnesota 55440
(612) 347 -8000
This is in response to your phone call concerning complaints you
have received from Little Canada residents about our trains
"whistling" for the crossings at Demont Avenue and County Road
B -2 in Little Canada. As discussed with you by phone, Soo Line
is very concerned about public safety at grade crossings. Also,
we are mandated by state law to whistle for such crossings
unless relieved of that responsibility through ordinances passed
by local communities which preclude our doing so.
I checked into this matter with our Law Department, and with the
Engineering and Transportation people. Soo Line must continue
to have its Engineers whistle for the crossings in question
unless your community passes an appropriate ordinance. The
crossing at County Road B -2 has crossing gates and flashing
signals. Both of these types of protection tend to reduce the
liability you may incur by passing an ordinance restricting
whistling.
Also as discussed, Mr. Don Hansen, Assistant General Manager for
Soo Line, has responsibility for Soo Line's operation in your
area. I talked with Don and he offered to meet with and /or your
representatives to further discuss this matter if necessary.
Don can be reached at 778 -3551.
Thank you for bringing this matter into discussion and we look
forward to working with you and your City Council on it.
Sincerely,
4",x
Darrell E.
