May 10, 1984
Dear Park Commission Members:
I presently own a 50% interest in Falcon Heights Tree Farm, a
small operation located near the University of Minnesota Farm campus
in St. Paul.
Due to some recent health problems of my partner and competing
demands for our time, we have mutually agreed to dissolve our part-
nership. However, we do not want our four years of effort to go to
waste and would like to donate all of our tree farm stock to the City
of Little Canada for whatever charitable deduction we can legally
obtain under the tax laws. I have spoken with both Jim Morelan and
Roger Glanzer concerning this proposal and each expressed interest in
the trees.
Our only request is that the Park Commission and City Council
approve the use of some part -time (minimum wage) help this fall to
dig the trees out. My partner and I will furnish the necessary pots
for the transplanting (at a cost of approximately $2,000).
We would prefer that the trees be first used to beautify City
owned land, including park property. If the Park Commission desires
to save some of the trees for transplanting in 1985 to any newly ac-
quired park land (such as ball parks), I am confident we can work
something out.
We have graded -the trees into 3 categories. "A" category trees
are first rate, quality nursery stock with a good center leader and
good shape. "B" category trees have good central leaders but may
have some bare spots or less desirable form. "C" category trees are
what we call "field grade" and may lack central leaders or have poor
to fair shape (these trees would probably be best used as cover in
less noticeable areas). The approximate inventory of each type of
tree and category we have are as follows:
Type of Tree Category Size Number
Scotch Pine A 4' Avg. 200
Scotch Pine 8 4' Avg. 150
Scotch Pine C 4' Avg. 160
White Pine A 212' Avg. 225
White Pine B 211' Avg. 200
White Pine C 212' Avg. 100
White Apruce A 2' Avg. 875
White Spruce B 2' Avg. 50
White Spruce C 2' Avg. 35
Black Hills Spruce A 2' Avg. 115
19
