Office of:
JOEL R. HANSON, Administrator
515 Little Canada Road
Little Canada, MN 55117
612- 484-2177
FAX: 612 - 484.4538
CITY OF LITTLE CANADA
RAMSEY COUNTY, MINNESOTA
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Fahey and Members of the City Council
FROM: Kris VanSchoonhoven
DATE: July 20, 1990
RE: Computer System Modifications
MAYOR
Michael Fahey
COUNCIL
Beverly Scalze
BIII Blesener
Rick Collova
Jim LaValle
As you know, we are running out of storage room on our file server.
City staff has erased all the files possible off of the server to
create more room. However, we still only have a limited amount of
storage space left. Since we would like to re- install our Rapidfile
system and also add Lotus onto our hard drive, we are in need of a
new server. One change resulting from the purchase of a new file
server will be its use as a dedicated server. It will no longer
function as a work station. This is being done to improve the
operating efficiency of the system. The present IBM AT server will
become a work station.
We are also in need of some additional personal computers, but have
decided to purchase those after the new office area is complete.
However, cabling will be provided for these additional computers in
the new office.
We have received two quotes on a new server. AmeriData has quoted a
total cost of $7,555.00 (includes the hardware, installation and
Novell training). Computerland has quoted a total cost of $7,985.35.
Upon checking their support costs, I found that AmeriData presently
charges us an annual phone support fee of $600 and a hardware
maintenance fee of $592.20 annually. Computerland charges $108 per
hour for phone support and their maintenance fee on the same
equipment that is currently covered by AmeriData would be $857.
Based on the pricing we have received from both companies, our past
experience with AmeriData, and our need for a new file server, we
recommend that the City Council approve the purchase of a new file
server from AmeriData.
kv
Enclosures
afFage 112
