October 12, 1990
Joel Hanson
City Administrator
Little Canada City Hall
515 Little Canada Road
Little Canada NN 55117
Subject: Potential Uses and /or Sale of the Old Little Canada Fire
Hall
The Little Canada Historical Society submits the following infor-
mation in response to the above mentioned subject:
Potential Uses
Regularly scheduled quarterly Historical Society meetings and other
meetings as scheduled-
Storage space is needed for records, artifacts, audio /visual tape
.storage, calendars, .books and etc..
Display area-We know of some residents and are certain that more
residents would place on loan to the historical society, many family
belongings for display if a secure area were to be procured.
Ideally the display area, if available, would blend in nicely in
serving the school students from both the Little Canada Elementary
and St. John's Schools. Minnesota history is taught in the curric-
ulum and due to the proximity of these schools to the old fire hall
a mini - museum would be an added value to the community. Transporta-
ion to and from the schools would be no problem with the present
trail system and the Historical Monuments at St.John's Church, St.
. John's Cemetery and the Gervais Grist ":sill site would tie in nicely
for a mini field trip for the students. We also must remember that
the old fire hallonce served as the meeting place for all village
council meetings.
Square Footage Requirements -
As for an estimate of square footage usage at this time and estimated
guess would be perhaps a minimum of 750 to 1,000 square feet.
This area would primarily serve as a display area. The lower level
of the fire hall would certainly suffice for scheduled meeting space.
The handicapped access to the lower level is a plus.
Utilization of the lower level kitchen area would have a potential
use for fund raiser dinners, receptions and the like.
Page 66
