Hanson
COUNCIL
Beverly Scalze
Bill Blesener
Rick Collova
Jim LaValle
ADMINISTRATOR
Joel R. Hanson
As you may have noticed in reading your recent Park
Commission minutes, Jim Morelan has indicated that he will
no longer be continuing in the present part -time Parks and
Recreation Director position. As a result, the City should
evaluate the direction this position and the overall
program is going to take.
To facilitate this discussion, I am conducting research of
other cities regarding the manner in which they handle this
position. We are getting copies of job descriptions,
program offerings, and salary ranges. This information can
be considered relative to the establishment of a full -time
Parks and Recreation Director position in our City. I am
also going to be discussing with neighboring cities the
possibility of contracting with them for this service.
Another option to be considered would be trying to continue
the position as present part -time capacity. However, I
have been informed that existing personnel is not
interested in taking over Jim's duties.
It should also be known that Jim Morelan has expressed
interest in this position dependent on the job description
and salary range. Obviously, his experience and knowledge
would be valuable to the City. However, it has been
discussed with him that given the serious cost constraints
we face this year and the long -term goals of the position,
this option may not meet his expectations.
It is my opinion that it would be in our best interest to
have a workshop session to discuss this matter in greater
detail. I would suggest the presence of Jim Morelan, Ken
Wehrle, Park Commission Chairman, and Steve Morelan,
Page 5
