cet 1 9947 Ceana( /a
515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 55117 -1600
(612) 484 -2177 / FAX: (612) 484 -4538
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Hanson and Members of the City Council
FROM: Dave Harris, Public Works Superintendent
DATE: February 8, 1991
RE: Power Washer and Steamer
MAYOR
Raymond G. Hanson
COUNCIL
Beverly Scalze
Bill Blesener
Rick Collova
Jim LaValle
ADMINISTRATOR
Joel R. Hanson
As you know, Spring is approaching very quickly. Last
year, the Public Works Department requested permission to
purchase a portable power washer. This piece of equipment
was not purchased. I would now like to propose purchasing
a portable power washer which will not only be used for
vehicle maintenance, but it can also be used for steaming
culverts when they freeze up in the Spring time. We are
currently facing this problem with the culverts right now
due to the premature thaw.
On the average, it takes the Public Works Department three
hours to thaw a 30 foot culvert with the jetting equipment
we have now. To -date, most of this work has run into
overtime in order to get the streets clear of the water and
avoid freezing which would in turn cause accidents. With
the purchase of a steamer, we can cut that time into a
third of what it would normally take to do the same job.
We would still need the same amount of equipment and
manpower. However, the job would be done much faster
thereby ensuring the safety of the public at a quicker
pace.
I have asked for quotations from several different
companies and had demonstrations from two. At this point
in time, Hotsy is the only steamer that has given a quote
to the City. I am still waiting for Karcher to send me
their proposal. Out of the two that we have seen
demonstrations on, the Hotsy is by far the most operator
friendly and safest to use. It had many safety features
that the Karcher did not.
The price Hotsy quoted was $3,033.57. I believe I could
possibly get them to drop their price depending on the
price that Karcher quotes.
DBH:kpv
Page. -59
