MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
May 4, 2006
)MP. PLAN Sanders stated that drawings have been completed on the Walter Street Trail Connection. This
REVIEW project is almost ready to be bid. He reviewed the plans with the Commission and stated that
150 feet of the project belongs to Little Canada and 95 feet was located in Maplewood. He
indicated that he plans to complete the bid with Maplewood as one project.
The Director stated that there are existing funds in the budget for this project, but due to the
boardwalk, the city may have to commit extra funds. This project seems to have a high level of
support from the City Council since it provides a vital link with Maplewood. Cost estimates are
$85,000 for Little Canada and $56,000 for Maplewood. The Director indicated that he will
meet with the City Administrator to discuss funding before this project is presented to the City
Council for approval.
Sanders continued his review of different parks within the city. He asked for the Commission's
ideas for improvements to the park facilities.
Nadeau Wildlife Park: Items identified included the following:
• Extension of walking path past children's play structure down to the wildlife area with
addition of wildlife viewing platform. The grade will have to be cut back to accommodate
this walkway down to the observation deck.
• Extension of walking path on peninsula through wildlife area down to Demont Avenue.
Pioneer Park: Items identified included the following:
• Add another full-service shelter at Pioneer or Spooner in the future.
Rondeau Park: Items identified included the following:
• Additional landscaping needed, including trees.
• Small shelter with place for picnic table or benches.
Old Fire Ha1L• Items identified included the following:
• Addition of skateboard park.
• Move pleasure rink south of Hockey rink so that skaters are on the same level as the shelter
to avoid mishaps.
• Construct new warming house to replace existing shelter that was built in the 1970's.
• Addition of more parking (permission would be needed from St. Paul Water Utility).
Round Lake Park: Items identified included the following:
Addition of Little Canada history signs would be nice just giving general history about our
city.
Capitol View: No need for this land as long as we can use Roseville Area Middle School
property.
