Director, Girls Activities TO: Mayor & City Council FROM: Jim Morelan, Parks & Recreation Director DATE: November 18, 1992 RE: Skating Rink Employees We have two facilities for outdoor skating in Little Canada. Each has a hockey and a pleasure rink and each has a warming house. Warming houses are adult supervised during open hours. The one thing that sets our facilities aside from that of other cities is the policy that we have had in always providing adult supervision during open hours. I received many comments from parents in this regard that feel comfortable leaving their children at the rinks to skate. We have experimented in the past with younger people in these positions and have found them not to have the maturity and experience necessary to provide the level of service that our residents have with our present policy. I had Kathy Glanzer survey some other cities over the past few days and have received the following information regarding rink building supervisors and rink maintenance workers. Falcon Heights Rink Attendant Rink Maint. Rink Supt. $6.00 /hour maximum. Attempts to hire college students, but frequently has to hire younger because of lack of applicants. $7.50 /hour maximum. (part -time) $10 /hour maximum. Coordinates and schedules both of the above and fills in where necessary in those positions at superintendent salary. St. Paul Rink Attendant $7.50 /hour starting + benefits. (All are full -time) 18 year minimum age. Rink Maint. $15 /hour average (Done by full -time maint. - too /zany facilities to coordinate on part -time basis.) Rink Supt. Also full -time at approximately $10 -12 starting rate. Page 10
