cM, 9/ 2V/4 Ce Of4tadtg
515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 55117 -1600
(612) 484 -2177 / FAX: (612) 484 -4538
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Hanson & Members of the City Council
FROM: Joel Hanson, City Administrator
DATE: April 9, 1993
RE: Viking Drive Water Main (Improvement 92 -13)
MAYOR
Raymond G. Hanson
COUNCIL
Beverly Scalze
Jim LaValle
Steve Morelan
Bob Pedersen
ADMINISTRATOR
Joel R. Hanson
At the public hearing held March 10, 1993, City staff was
directed to determine if an alternate location for the
Viking Drive water main could be achieved at less cost. We
were also directed to evaluate the possibility of City
participation in the cost of this project.
Regarding the first assignment, staff has evaluated the
possibility of providing an alternate route for this water
main coming from County Road B2 through the side yard areas
of adjoining property. It is the conclusion of the City
Engineer and staff that no cost advantage can be gained by
attempting this type of route due to the extreme variations
in topography, the significant amount of trees through this
area, distance between buildings, the cost of easements,
and the costs associated with property restoration.
Therefore, the route the City Engineer proposed does appear
to be the most economical given the factors previously
mentioned.
We are asking the City Engineer to provide us documentation
regarding the exact location of the three Williams
Pipelines located on Viking Drive. If the water main could
be located between Viking Drive and Highway 36, some cost
savings could be achieved through reduced restoration costs
as well as a lesser impact to existing trees. The trade
off to this route would be costs associated with either
street restoration or reconstruction of the existing fence
line. Also, a concern about leakage from the pipelines
following the water service line to the home would also
exist. Some correspondence from 1984 relating to locating
the improvement is attached for your review.
Page 1
