Bow - and -arrow deer
hunting plan is killed
BILL GARDNER STAFF WRITER
The Eagan City Council has
changed a long- standing tradition
by voting not to allow bow- and -ar-
row hunting for deer within the
city limits.
The council majority decided
last week that Eagan has become
too urbanized for bow hunting.
"We have to change with the
times," Mayor Tom Egan said.
In previous years the city grant-
ed special bow hunting permits.
Each year the City Council consid-
ered the issue and in recent years
had approved bow hunting by a
3 -2 vote after considerable discus-
sion.
This year Egan changed his po-
sition because he became con-
vinced bow - and -arrow hunting was
a very inefficient means of con-
trolling the growing deer herd in
the city. Only four hunters had
applied for bow hunting permits.
Now no permits will be issued.
"I'm extremely concerned about
the number of deer - related acci-
dents," Egan said. "But I came to
the conclusion that I personally
could no longer justify the continu-
ation of bow - and -arrow hunting on
the theory that it regulates the
deer population.'
In addition, Egan said he was
concerned that deer wounded by
arrows would live a long time in
an injured and diseased condition.
"The deer will die a slow and
painful death," Egan said. "That's
not exactly sport."
The city will continue to cooper-
ate with the Minnesota Depart-
ment of Natural Resources, which
holds annual special deer hunts in
the Minnesota River Valley areas
of Eagan, Mendota Heights,
Bloomington and Burnsville.
Jon Parker, DNR area wildlife
manager, urged the City Council
"The deer will die a
slow and painful
death. That's not
exactly sport."
TOM EGAN
MAYOR
to retain bow- and -arrow hunting.
"I think they were presented
with a lot of misleading informa-
tion about bow hunting by friends
of animals," Parker said after-
ward. Claims that bow hunting is
inhumane "were very much over-
stated," he said.
In previous years, bow hunters
could take two deer apiece in the
Eagan area, but the regulations
have been changed to allow five
deer for each bow hunter this
year.
Parker said the deer population
in Eagan seems to have increased
slightly in recent years. The spe-
cial DNR hunt this season in the
Minnesota River area is scheduled
for Oct. 30 -31, Dec. 4 -5 and Jan
8 -9.
The DNR plans to take from 150
to 220 deer during the special hunt
this season, with DNR sharpshoot-
ers making up the difference be-
tween the goal and the number of
deer that regular hunters kill,
Parker said.
Eagan has 53,000 people and
has grown rapidly over the past
decade, becoming more urban
each year.
"It seemed that that particular
sport just no longer had its place,"
City Administrator Tom Hedges
said.
Council Members Sean Hunter
and Pat Awada voted to allow
bow - and -arrow hunting for deer in
the city. At the same meeting, the
council voted to continue granting
permits to hunt ducks, geese and
pheasants with a shotgun.
