Aug. 15,2013
Dear Mayor Biesener and Members of Little Canada City Council,
We are members of a Little Canada Book Club and are writing in regard to the possible
installation of a Little Free Library (littlefreelibrary.org) in Little Canada. The mission of the
Little Free Library organization is to "Promote literacy and the love of reading by building free
book exchanges worldwide ". Reading materials for people of all ages are placed in the LFL and
are available free of charge. Visitors can both borrow and leave books for others to use.
Little Free Libraries are approximately 20 "x12" , mounted on a post and located in an easily
accessed location. A photo of one located in Roseville and plan drawings are enclosed. Our
group would be responsible for the construction and installation of the Library. We would also
serve as Stewards by maintaining the Library on a regular basis. Two locations that may he
considered for the Little Free Library are near the Little Canada City Center /Historical Society or
near the Marketplace.
After discussing this project with Mr. Stephen Grittman, City Planner and Mr. Joel Hanson, City
Administrator, we were advised an installation of this kind would require an outdoor display
conditional use permit and the fee for such a permit is several hundred dollars. We would like to
inquire if there is a possibility that the fee be waived in this instance and if permission to install
a Little Free Library could be considered.
Little Free Libraries are located in many communities in the Twin Cities, Minnesota and world-
wide and are seen as community - builders and a wonderful way to promote reading.
Thank you for your thoughtful consideration of this request. Please feel free to contact Phyllis
Kendig (651- 484 -0705) or Mary Lou Kostecki (612 -201 -3353) if you have any questions.
Res ectfully,
i:
Barba a Anderson Bonnie Pope
Lorraine Anderson Julie Rindelaub
Beverly Collova
Susan Hawkinson
Phyllis Kendig
Mary Lou Kostecki
Vivian LaRock
Vicki Marlowe
1
N16 16 Ini:l
01 Ty OF II17I -r.
