NORTHWEST ASSOCIATED CONSULTANTS, INC.
4800 Olson Memorial Highway, Suite 202, Golden Valley, MN 55422
Telephone: 763.231 .2555 Facsimile: 763.231 .2561 planners @nacplanning.com
MEMORANDUM
TO: Little Canada Planning Commission
FROM: Stephen Grittman
DATE: October 4, 2013
RE: Little Canada — Population Projections
FILE NO: 758.09 — 13.09
Background
Metropolitan Council has published preliminary population projections for 2040 for all
metro area communities. The projections vary widely around the region, showing a
dramatic decline for some, and a dramatic increase for others. Little Canada's
projection for 2040 is shown as 13,900, up by 2,600 people over the 2030 projection.
Household growth is projected to be up by nearly 1,300 households during that period.
There is no way to interpret these numbers in any way other than to assume that Little
Canada would need to increase its high density housing supply dramatically to reach
those figures. This item is being raised since Met Council is seeking comment prior to
December 1 before it finalizes its projections, which will have impacts for
Comprehensive Planning in the next round.
Staff will have additional material for discussion at the upcoming meeting.
Summary and Recommendation
Staff may ask the Commission to provide a comment to the City Council as to a formal
response prior to the December deadline.
pc: Kathy Glanzer
Steve Westerhaus
Lee Elfering
