Hanson
City Administrator
515 Little Canada Road
Little Canada, MN 55117
Re: Proposed 1995 Legal Budget
Our File No. 7750
Dear Joel:
P.02/04
Telephone
(612) 222.2541
Facsimile
(612) 223 -5269
A review of our general fund billings from January through
August, 1994, indicates that legal services billed to the general
fund of the City for this period are $78,877.67. This amount
includes costs advanced of $3,652.63, and legal services rendered
relative to the items we categorized on our billing statements as
civil and criminal retainers, special projects, litigation,
general prosecution retainer, and gross misdemeanor prosecution,
which also includes attendance at downtown St. Paul arraignments
on a periodic basis. Some of these items categorized as special
projects and litigation may be charged to funds other than the
general fund.
Similarly, legal fees relative to the improvement projects
are charged to the public improvement fund and are not included
in the above total. However, to the extent that legal services
relative to the general fund categories continue at the same
level throughout the remaining four months of 1994, legal
expenditures may exceed the 1994 budget, and a budget adjustment
may be necessary.
Our retainer pfor civil tworkringthe amount of d $1,900.00. Our y records indicate that there has been an increase in our overhead costs
relative to the legal work Covered by our civil retainer.
Therefore, I am proposing that the 1995 budget include a monthly
retainer for civil work in the amount of $1,975.00.
Our 1994 Retainer Agreement provides for a monthly retainer
for criminal misdemeanor work in the amount of $2,800.00. This
amount is the same as charged in 1993 for the criminal
Page 3
