515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 55117 -1600
(612) 484 -2177 / FAX: (612) 484 -4538
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Hanson & Members of the City Council
FROM: Joel Hanson, City Administrator
DATE: November 18, 1994
RE: Building Official Contract
MAYOR
Raymond G. Hanson
COUNCIL
Beverly Scalze
Jim LaValle
Steve Moreton
Bob Pedersen
ADMINISTRATOR
Joel R. Hanson
Please find attached the proposed contract for building
inspection services. This contract would be with Gregory Schmit
of Castle Design and Development Company, Inc. It is possible
that some modifications could occur subject to review of the City
Attorney.
I have not received proposals from other potential service
providers. While I have had contacts with many firms regarding
their interest in providing this service, I feel that
Mr. Schmit's fee schedule is more than competitive and his
performance makes him a logical choice to meet our needs. It
should also be noted that North St. Paul has contracted with him
to be their building official as well. Therefore, I believe we
have a stable situation in that his workload should be enough to
keep him busy in this field.
I am recommending we contract with Mr. Schmit based on his
performance since August 1, 1994 as our Building Official. He
has proven to be thorough, professional, timely, knowledgeable in
his field, responsive, and consistent. He has fit in well with
our staff and he has provided us with many ideas as to improve
our current inspection system which will enhance customer service
as well as improve documentation for our own record - keeping
purposes.
I think Mr. Schmit will do an excellent job for the City and I
strongly recommend we contract for his services as proposed.
JRH:kpv
Enclosure
Page 27
