The Phalen Chain of Lakes Watershed covers about 23 square miles in Ramsey and <br />Washington Counties. It includes 5 major lakes, 950 acres of wetlands, and several connect- <br />ing creeks called County Ditches. <br />From the south end of Lake Phalen, the Watershed outlets through the Middle Belt <br />Line Sewer to the Mississippi River. <br />Phalen Chain of Lek <br />Watershed <br />Rainy River <br />Vadnais <br />Heights <br />Major Minnesota Watersheds <br />The Watershed is the land area that <br />drains the to the 5, major lakes — Kohlman, <br />Gervais, Keller, Round and Phalen. The lakes <br />are like a string of beads, following the ancient <br />bed of the pre - glacial St. Croix River. <br />The lakes and surrounding park lands <br />are unique and heavily used recreational re- <br />sources for local residents and East Metro Area. <br />Lake Phalen includes the only public swimming <br />beach in St. Paul. The Chain of Lakes and parks <br />provide high quality urban fishing, walking and <br />biking paths, skiing, and other recreational op- <br />portunities. <br />The Chain of Lakes is part of a major fly- <br />way for migratory waterfowl and songbirds, <br />and provides significant habitat for other birds <br />and wildlife in an urban setting. <br />The watershed includes parts of seven <br />communities — Little Canada, Maplewood, <br />North St. Paul, and smaller portions of <br />Oakdale, St. Paul, Vadnais Heights and White <br />Bear Lake. <br />Mississippi River <br />Keller Lake <br />PHALEN CHAIN OF LAKES WATERSHED PROJECT <br />Page 20 <br />
