Sign - Address. A sign communicating street address only, <br />whether script or in numerical form. <br />Sign - Advertising. A billboard, poster panel, painted <br />bulletin board, or other communication device which is used to <br />advertise products, goods, and /or services which are not <br />exclusively related to the premise on which the sign is <br />located. <br />Sign Area. That area with the marginal lines of the surface <br />which bears the advertisement or, in the case of messages, <br />figures or symbols attached directly to the part of a <br />building, that area which is included in the smallest <br />rectangle or series of geometric figures which can be made to <br />circumscribe the message, figure or symbol displayed thereon. <br />* Sign - Area Identification. A freestanding sign which <br />identifies the name of a single or two - family residential <br />subdivision consisting of twenty (20) or more lots; a <br />residential planned unit development; multiple residential <br />complex consisting of three (3) or more structures; an office <br />or business structure containing three (3) or more independent <br />operations; a single business consisting of three (3) or more <br />separate structures existing on individual platted lots or as <br />a planned unit development; or any integrated combination of <br />the above. Said sign shall be limited only to the <br />identification of an area or complex and shall not, unless <br />approved by the City Council, contain the name of individual <br />owners or tenants. An area identification sign shall contain <br />no advertising. <br />Sign - Bench. A sign which is affixed to a bench such as at <br />a bus stop. <br />Sign - Business. Any sign which identifies a business or <br />group of businesses, either retail or wholesale, or any sign <br />which identifies a profession or is used in the identification <br />or promotion of any principal commodity or service, including <br />entertainment, offered or sold upon the premise where such <br />sign is located. <br />Sign - Campaign. A temporary sign promoting the candidacy of <br />a person running for a governmental office, or promoting an <br />issue to be voted on at a governmental election. <br />Sign - Canopy. Any message or identification which is affixed <br />to a projection or extension of a building or structure <br />erected in such a manner as to provide a shelter or cover over <br />the approach to any entrance of a store, building or place of <br />assembly. <br />* Amended by Ordinance No. 233, July 25, 1984 <br />17 <br />Page 44 <br />
