MSFC 503.2.2 Authority. The fire code official shall have the authority to require
an increase in the minimum access widths where they are inadequate for fire or
rescue operations.
MSFC 503.2.3 Surface. Fire apparatus access roads shall be designed and
maintained to support the imposed loads of fire apparatus and shall be surfaced
so as to provide all weather driving capabilities.
MSFC 503.2.4 Turning radius. The required turning radius of a fire apparatus
access road shall be determined by the fire code official.
MSFC 503.2.5 Dead ends. Dead -end fire apparatus access roads in excess of
150 feet (45 720 mm) in length shall be provided with an approved area for
turning around fire apparatus.
MSFC 503.4 Obstruction of fire apparatus access roads. Fire apparatus
access roads shall not be obstructed in any manner, including the parking of
vehicles. The minimum widths and clearances established in Section 503.2.1
shall be maintained at all times.
The issue with the fire access roads is the fact that the storage of the lumber is
on a dirt parking lot and the storage changes with the weather and fire access
roads change. Fire apparatus access roads shall be designed and maintained to
support the imposed loads of fire apparatus and shall be surfaced so as to
provide all weather driving capabilities. The fire access roads on this property
have been a continued problem. It may be necessary to increase the fire access
road dimensions. Pictures of inadequate fire access roads are attached.
Minnesota State Fire Code states that an approved fire hydrant suitable for the
fire hazard involved shall be provided for open storage yards. It may be
necessary to add an additional fire hydrant. It may be necessary to "loop" this
main to ensure adequate fire flows if multiple hydrants are accessed during a fire.
The City Engineer has been contacted to calculate fire flow calculations
regarding fire protection. When this information has been provided, a supplement
to this letter will be provided.
Respectfully submitted,
mow._
Jim L e
Fire Marshal
