SANDERS
WACKER
WEHRMAN
BERGLY
October 5, 1995
Mr. Joel Hanson
City of Little Canada
515 East Little Canada Road
Little Canada, Minnesota 55117
RE: Minnesota ReLeaf Tree Planting Program
Dear Joel,
LANDSCAPE 365 East Kellogg Boulevard
ARCHITECTS Saint Paul. Minnesota 55101
AND 612-221-0401
PLANNERS Fax: 612 -297 -6817
Attached is a proposed application for tree planting funding assistance from the DNR's Minnesota ReLeaf
Program. The goal of the program is to encourage homeowner's throughout the City to plant trees for
energy conservation.
Key elements of the grant request include:
1. Approximately 420 trees are proposed to be planted.
2. The trees will be purchased from Green Value Nursery at wholesale cost plus 5 %. (The average tree
cost is $46.00 for a 6 -8 ft. potted tree).
3. The homeowners will provide half of the cost of the trees and the DNR grant will provide the other
half of the cost. The only cost to the City will be staff and consultant time to plan and administer the
program. (The grant requires a 1:1 match with a maximum grant of $10,000.00.)
4. The planting would be done in 1996.
5. The City would verify the eligibility of the homeowners for the grant and would issue a voucher. The
homeowner would pick up the trees directly from Green Value Nursery for the reduced cost. the
City would receive the grant and reimburse Green Value Nursery for the vouchers.
6. The homeowners would be required to follow certain planting guidelines for energy conservation.
The homeowners would also be required to agree to a 10 year maintenance program for the trees.
7. The City would be required to publicize the program, hold workshops or informational meetings and
distribute literature on the program.
I believe this program would be of great benefit to the residents and to the City of Little Canada. Please give
me a call if you have any questions or comments.
Sincerely,
William D. Sanders ASLA
Landscape Architect
:dmn
Enc.
PAGE 40
