I have visited with Joel Hanson over the last six years regarding the audit. When I learned what
Little Canada paid for the audit and accounting services in 1990, I was surprised and suggested
that something be done about getting the records in order so the City would have internally
prepared financial statements. The fees were as follows:
Tautges Redpath Company Ltd. - White Bear
Actual and 1995 Proposed Fees
Audit Acctg. Svcs. Special Projects Total
Olsen, Thielen & Co. Ltd.
Proposed Audit Fees
1995 $ 17,000 $ 2,000* $ $ 19,000 $ 15,500
1994 21,000 3,138 141 24,279 15,000
1993 21,000 7,602 2,324 30,926 15,000
1992 25,000 9,340 6,325 40,665 8,000 to $ 12,000
1991 23,917 8,243 5,475 37,635 8,000 to 12,000
1990 23,917 10,036 8,897 42,850 8,000 to 12,000
1989 18,202 9,787 9,663 37,652
TOTAL $ 150,036 $ 50,146 $ 32,825 $ 233,007
* City of Little Canada staff estimate.
I was told the 1989 fee was high because the City's records were in bad shape and the accounting
firm had to do the bookkeeping before they could do the audit. The City did not want to change
auditors because the new administrator needed time to get a handle on the City's total needs and had
to rely on the auditing firm to do the bookkeeping, even though the City had a full-time accountant.
Based on our fees plus Tautges' special projects fees it appears that the City has paid out $77,530 for
accounting fees during 1990 - 1994 that should not have been necessary.
