The purpose of the fence is to prevent some one from rolling off the slope and the retaining wall on
to the street. That seems to be the case on County Road C (on the east side of Lake Gervais) where a
steep slope meets the retaining wall and a fence has been erected. The Community Center at the City of
Maplewood has a few retaining walls around a lagoon. None of the walls have a fence because the grade
behind them is flat, even though the walls are taller than those on Dianna Lane
Safety of a Masonry Retaining Wall v. a 1.1 Steep Slope: The Masonry retaining wall will be safer
than the steep slope on the Dianna Lane entrance because (1) It will leave a boulevard for the kids to
stand on while waiting for the school bus and (2) The steep grade of Dianna Lane is a hazard to any
pedestrian there, with or without the retaining wall. A sloped retaining wall will enhance that danger. I
understand that three four weeks ago a kid had rolled off the unprotected slope on to County Road B2
near the Dianna Lane intersection. The accident was averted by a quick action of the motorists on Co
Road B2.
/agadea Dalai
Page 128
