ce+ ceeezneuk
515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 55117 -1600
(612) 484 -2177 / FAX: (612) 484 -4538
March 17, 1995
TO: Mayor Fahey and Members of the City Council
FROM: Joel R. Hanson, City Administrator
RE: Employee Health Insurance
MAYOR
Michael I. Fahey
COUNCIL
Beverly Scalze
Jim LaValle
Steve Morelan
Bob Pedersen
ADMINISTRATOR
Joel R Hanson
Currently, Medica provides health insurance coverage for City
employees. The City pays the single coverage and caps its
payment for family coverage at $318.00 per month. This resulted
in a monthly employee cost of $41.00.
Our renewal was effective on March 1st. With the rate increases
received, the monthly cost to employees with dependent coverage
has increased to $94.21 per month (130 %). Other coverage options
and providers were then investigated.
Based on quotations received and the request of our employees, I
am recommending we change health insurance providers effective
April 1st. The new provider would be Health Partners with their
Mayo /Triple Choice Option. The monthly cost to the employees
will decline to $35.41 by making the change. The City will also
save some dollars on the coverage we provide to employee -only
accounts.
The employees have also requested that the City use these
additional savings to share in the employees' added cost for the
month of March. (Difference between $94.21 and $41.00 or
$53.21.) This impacts seven employees and would equal $372.47.
This would be a nice gesture on the City's part and is more than
offset by the savings we realize from this change. I would
recommend we offset the full amount for the month of March.
Page 66
