515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 55117 -1600
(612) 484 -2177 / FAX: (612) 484 -4538
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Fahey & Members of the City Council
FROM: Joel Hanson, City Administrator
DATE: May 5, 1995
RE: Keller Parkway Update
MAYOR
Michael I. Fahey
COUNCIL
Beverly Sealze
Jim LaValie
Steve Morelan
Bob Pedersen
ADMINISTRATOR
Joel R. Hanson
As has been written in recent publications, the City of Maplewood
chose to go with 11 foot driving lanes and 3 foot paved shoulders
for their portion of the Keller Parkway road maintenance project.
The County has indicated to me that this is within MSA design
standards which allow an 11 foot driving lane as long as 3 foot
shoulders exist with at least 2 feet paved. However, the
shoulder paving agreements that our respective cities are
executing does not include a portion of Keller Parkway and Arcade
Street south of Co. Rd. C down to Highway 36. (see map attached)
The County has indicated that there is no additional cost to the
City by paving the shoulders in this area given the turn back
agreements, but they would like our input as to the shoulder
width to be used. Given each city's respective position for the
balance of Keller Parkway, they would hope that a standard
shoulder width could be used for each side of the roadway through
this area. Dan Schacht, of Ramsey County Public Works, did state
that a variable shoulder width (i.e. 5 feet in Little Canada, 3
feet in Maplewood) is workable, but not their preference.
As a result of the County's inquiry, I informed them that I would
bring this matter before the Council to determine if any
modifications from our previous position are necessary. Your
input on this matter at Wednesday's meeting would be appreciated.
JRH:kpv
Enclosure
Page 14
