Hanson
The Personnel Policy provides for a boot allowance of $150 per employee on an as- needed basis
(but no more than once per year) for the purchase of steel -toed boots. This allowance has not
been reviewed for several years. Steel -toed boots are a required piece of safety equipment for
Public Works and Parks employees.
I surveyed some of the surrounding cities relative to the boot allowance provided. The results
are as follows:
Arden Hills - $275 annual clothing allowance (includes boots);
Falcon Heights — one pair of boots per year, no set dollar amount;
Maplewood - $200 annually;
North St. Paul - $175 annually;
Roseville — PW $370 annual clothing allowance (includes boots). Mechanics get $125
per year;
Vaclnais Heights - $50 annually;
*L,ittle Canada also has an allowance for pants of approximately $200 per year per
employee. Shirts and winter gear are provided by the City.
1 have attached some sample boot costs that I obtained from Red Wing Shoes. The clerk at Red
Wing Shoes informed me that the 112406 is the most popular boot with Public Works personnel.
Red Wing also provides cities with a 15% discount.
It should be noted that our employees typically buy a pair of boots every 2 to 3 years. Based on
the information provided, it would he staffs recommendation that the Personnel Policy be
amended to increase the boot allowance to up to $200 per employee on an as- needed basis as
determined by the Public Works Superintendent and Parks & Recreation Director, but no more
than once per year.
