Hanson
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Blesener and Members of the City Council
FROM: Joel Hanson, City Administrator
DATE: March 21, 2014
RE: Public Works/Park Facility Project Update
The Building Committee has been working with the Construction Manager and Architect to make
revisions to the building to lower the overall project costs. At a meeting this past Tuesday, we reviewed
the list attached list (Attachment #1) and implemented a number of the suggestions. (Attachment #2 lets
you see what the building would look like without the brick piers — item #3. I don't have a PDF of the
first rendering we presented at the Open House. I also don't have one showing what the office area will
look like with a lower roof height — item #7). These changes reduced the budget by $382,000. Another
$10,000 can be added to that amount by eliminating air hose runs the east wall area (staff felt a portable
compressor was a better alternative.) It should also be noted that some of the items will need to be
funded in other ways, but we felt they really were not part of the building project itself. Therefore, we
will still need to come up with money for them. (See items 8 and 13.)
Since that meeting, other alterations have been discussed. Attachment #3 is a revised site layout
depicting some of these considerations. Here is a listing of what is being evaluated:
® Make Wash Bay into combined wash bay /mechanics area by using curtain to segregate area (this
was being done in Mahtomedi). Space reduced in NW comer of building.
• Move Parks Shop Room away from office area and into corner of vehicle storage area. (This
was not usable space in previous layouts due to garage door from wash bay to vehicle storage
area.)
• With Parks Shop Room moved, shrink overall office area (reduction in SW corner of building).
• Lunch room training facility sized to accommodate 18 people.
• Stair access to mezzanine moved into vehicle storage area.
• Maintain higher roof height in maintenance area, but reduce it by about two feet in vehicle
storage area.
These items are still being priced and selecting some of these could change those on Attachment #1. We
anticipate having this information for Wednesday's meeting plus a colored elevation. We will also
discuss these possible changes with Public Works & Parks staff to get their reaction
