SEH
Buil ling a Bette' World
for All of UJs°
May 6, 2014
Mr. Joel Hanson
City of Little Canada
515 Little Canada Rd. E.
Little Canada, MN 55117 -1633
Dear Mr. Hanson:
RE: Railroad Quiet Zone Report
City of Little Canada Minnesota
SEH No. LITTC 126672
The Canada Pacific Railroad has changed their system operations and the line through Little Canada has
seen a substantial increase in rail traffic prompting noise complaints from the residents. This report
outlines the steps necessary to obtain a federal approved quiet zone. Quiet zone rules were developed
to allow railroads to suspend the use of railroad horns provided certain safety measures are in place.
Local agencies need to make a formal request to implement a quiet zone.
At a minimum, a crossing located within a quiet zone must have railroad signals with gates and constant
warning time. Of the six crossings within the City, only one currently has railroad signals with gates.
There will be substantial roadway and signal work to upgrade all the crossings within the City. The rules
allow multiple quiet zones within a City and for phasing of the improvements.
If you have any questions, do not hesitate to call me at 651.490.2042. Thank you for the opportunity to
work with your City.
Sincerely, /'
David M.
