Hanson
Metro Bowhunters Resource Base and the Sculley's are asking if the City will conduct
archery hunting as part of our continued Deer Control Program. Attached are the results of
the last few years of aerial deer count surveys. You will note that we have had a dramatic
reduction in the overall population counted through the Ramsey County Survey program.
(There were 110 deer in our area in 2010. That number has dropped to 24 in 2014.)
1 do not believe a permanent discontinuance of the Deer Control Program is possible when
you consider the deer population in 1999 was 22 deer counted in the Northeast Area of the
city, but in 2010, that number had grown to 81.
The City Council has the following options to consider:
• Continue the Deer Control program in the same manner as recent years, subject to the
continued cooperation of property owners in the designated control areas.
® Continue the Deer Control program in only the NE area of the City (Sculley property
and Maplewood/Ramsey County area).
® Continue the Deer Control program, but reduce the allowable hunt periods (Sculley's
had permission for the entire archery season and MBRB conducted four weekend
hunt cycles.)
• Discontinue the program for 2014 and evaluate the impact on the population numbers
in the 2015 survey.
It should be noted that this program has had community support; complaints about the deer
population have subsided. (I did receive a call this spring about 11 deer crossing a year in
the Lake Gervais area.) We have also had a few residents who do not feel we should
continue the program as they enjoy seeing the deer.
Please advise us as to how you would like to proceed.
