MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
MAY 28, 2014
may be an economy of scale in combining similar improvements at the
Fire Station. He indicated that a workshop will be held on June 11 `h to
review these items, and suggested that the Fire Department submit a list
for consideration at that workshop. Smiley also noted that the Department
has a truck replacement scheduled for 2017.
The Department and the Council next reviewed a listing of discussion
items. The first was to address the issue of fire prevention efforts at
Montreal Courts and The Provinces. It was suggested that the Fire
Department attend the July 15th meeting that is held with multi -family
housing management. The meeting is at 1:30 p.m. at the City Center.
Smiley asked about the status of a first right -of -refusal for 331 East Little
Canada Road. The City Administrator indicated that he contacted the
owner who indicated hesitancy in signing this document. The owner
stated that she may be ready to sell the property this fall or next year and
indicated a willingness to sell to the City when she is ready to sell. The
Administrator noted that money has been earmarked in the Capital
Improvement Budget for this purpose.
There was discussion on Vadnais Heights' efforts in recovering Fire
Department costs for responding to freeway calls. The consensus of that
discussion was that it did not appear the effort involved would be
commensurate with the amount of money that could possibly be collected.
This issue may be one that is revisited sometime in the future, however.
Smiley reported that 17 of Little Canada's fire fighters now have EMS
training and 5 have EMT training. Any new fire fighters will be required
to have EMS training. Smiley noted that the Department is now
responding to all accidents with injuries. The majority of these are on the
freeway.
Morelan reported that the Fire Department is now contracting with the
City of Roseville for IT services, and noted that the cost of doing so is
$1,000 per month. Cost is apportioned out by users/computers among all
the cities and entities on the system. The Little Canada Fire Department
has 5 computers.
Smiley reported that the Fire Department has entered into an auto -aid
agreement with Maplewood in relation to the 35E MN Pass Lane project.
Given the closings of various ramps as the project progresses, there may
be times that the Little Canada Fire Department will be able to respond
quicker to freeway accidents in Maplewood. Smiley did not anticipate
much activity or a long time duration.
3
