MINUTES
PLANNING COMMISSION
JANUARY 8, 2015
Saxon Lanes would like to paint a series of sign and graphics messages on
the exterior of their building. These include `BOWL" painted on the
south and north sides of the building and "BOWL" painted on the west
wall, near the entrance, in place of "Lanes". The Planner noted that the
property has frontage on two streets and the building silhouette for these
frontages appears to total approximately 53,000 square feet. Under the
Code up to 15% of the facade of the building fronting on the street is
allowed for signage. In this case that would yield an allowable sign area
of 795 square feet.
The Planner noted that the drawings submitted by the applicant do not
include specific signage dimensions. The applicant did submit listing of
each of the sign dimensions which indicated that each of the three
"BOWLING" signs would be 210 square feet in size. The Planner noted
that the drawing submitted show these signs as much larger than the
reported dimensions. The Planner also indicated that the Sign ordinance is
not specific about this type of sign style or design. The Planner
commented that it is his position that the proposal is consistent with the
intent of the Code as well as the Architectural Guidelines. He
recommended approval of the PUD Permit and Architectural Review
subject to that the sign do not exceed the 795 square foot maximum.
Edward Falice, representing AMF Saxon Lanes, stated that it was his
understanding that the signage would be under the 795 square foot
maximum. Duray asked if the color scheme of red, grey, and white as
shown in the diagrams is what will be used on the building. Falice replied
that that was correct. Duray asked if the entire building would be
repainted. Falice replied that most of the building has already been
repainted. The sign lettering will still need to be painted on the building.
Duray asked about the stars shown in the diagrams. The City Planner
indicated that the stars are not considered part of the signage given they do
not convey a message.
Ledin asked if the paint would be a "glow in the dark" type. Falice replied
that just regular paint would be used. Duray asked how the building
would be lit. Falice reported that there is no additional lighting being
proposed. It was noted that there are currently exterior lights on the
building which change color.
Ledin pointed out that the Mingles sign still exists. The City Planner
noted that the Code states that signage for businesses no longer in
existence should be removed, and indicated that it would be appropriate
for the Commission to comment on this issue.
-2-
