The Director estimated
that it should be done in June. He noted that the project will not interfere
with the use of the ballfields.
Sullivan asked if native plantings will be used in and around the pond area.
The Director reported that the Watershed is recommending the types of
plantings with the goal to improve water quality.
ARBOR DAY The Director indicated that this year's Arbor Day Celebration will be held
CELEBRATION on Tuesday, April 28th, at 1:00 p.m. in Spooner Park. Children from St.
John's School and Little Canada Elementary will be participating in the
celebration.
56 LITTLE The Director reported that the City made an offer to purchase 56 Little
CANADA Canada Road East and then received a counter-offer from the owners. The
ROAD EAST Council discussed the counter-offer and declined it, informing the realtor for
the property that the City's original offer still stands.
The Director stated that he was not sure how committed the City Council was
in purchasing this property. He indicated that about 15 years ago the
discussion by the Commission was that the City would like to purchase all of
the Little Canada Road properties up to the railroad tracks as they became
available. The Director indicated that in addition to this property and the
other directly abutting the railroad tracks, there are still two other key
properties that are closer to the Veterans Memorial.
BROECKER Sanders presented a reforestation plan for the northwest corner of Spooner
MEMORIAL- Park, which would be funded in part with funds received from the Broecker
REFOREST- Estate. Sanders described the trees included in this reforestation plan which
ATION PLAN include oaks as the primary over -story trees and a variety of under -story
trees. The trees recommended are native plantings and will bring this area to
more of a native woodland. I -Ie noted that many of the existing trees are
deteriorating and there will be the need to clean out some of this area.
Sanders also pointed out that the size of the trees recommended are 5 to 10
gallon container trees, therefore, it will take a while before they get to a
substantial size. Sanders suggested that the labor for planting the trees could
come from the Department of Corrections program. The Director stated that
there may be some scouts also interested in helping. Sanders stated that the
use of a bobcat and hand labor for planting will be all that is necessary.
Sanders estimated that cost of these trees at $5,000 to $6,000.
2
