Hanson
With the City's recent involvement in the City-wide Garage Sale program, Council Member
Torkelson provided invaluable assistance in coordinating this program. One of the tasks he
completed to help promote the program was the establishment of a Facebook account. (Here is
the link to the Facebook page: http://www.f'aeebook.corn/cityoflittlecanada
As some of the Council will recall, we evaluate the use of social media back in 2012 based on
our 2012 Goal Setting Session. (I'm attaching the Info Update memo that contained the
discussion of this topic as well as the portion of the minutes that dealt with this topic,) At that
time, the Council chose not to pursue a social media presence but felt we should do periodic
check -ins to see if conditions warrant a change in our approach.
My concern with social media relates to keeping the content current and meaningful and policies
for managing the site including what can be posted, who can update content, and management of
offensive comments. In doing research back in 2012, my recollection is while a number of cities
had Facebook pages, they were lightly followed. In viewing the link to the site Christian created,
the site already had 131 likes. after being up for only a short period.
Council Member Torkelson will be preparing a memo on his position on the use of social media
that he will have ready for Wednesday night. It seems like a good time to revisit this topic. In
doing so, we may want to schedule a workshop to enable us to spend more time on the subject.
