Important Safety Considerations: Three important criteria for such bikeways are:
Safe
1. (a) Bikeway is a 4 to 6 foot wide designated bike lane on a street; or
(b) A designated quiet street bike route; or
(c) A combined use trail (offstreet)
2. Bikeway has little or no cross-traffic, especially driveways, busy
roads and freeway entrances.
Efficient/Accessible
1. The bikeway should be accessible to the commuter within 1/2 mile, and
should not divert the commuter more than 1/2 mile in any direction.
(This would require a bikeway each mile.)
2. The bikeway should have comparatively few stop signs.
Complete
The bikeway must have bridges or safe crossings at barriers (rivers,
streams, freeways and railroads).
Potential Corridors: The committees have identified specific limitations and potential
solutions as follows (from east to west):
Corridor 1 Edgerton: This needs designated bike lanes (surface repair and striping).
Corridor 2 Soo Line/Canadian Pacific Railroad (North-South line,just west of Hwy 35 E,
not the T/ento Trail): This needs trail surface from north of Hwy 36 to Trout Brook Trail
and a bridge at Hwy 36. (There are existing City of Little Canada trails from the corner
of Rice Street and North Owasso Blvd to north of Hwy 36.)
Corridor 3 Rice Street: Rice Street is very busy with motor vehicles and has no bike lane
or shoulder at the Highway 36 crossing, or south of Hwy 36.
Corridor 4 Western Avenue: Needs a bridge at Hwy 36. (Western is already ranked as a
"good" commuter street, but lacks only a bridge across Hwy 36.)
Corridor S Dale Street: There are hazardous motor vehicle crossings of the mixed use
bike trail under Hwy 36 (entrance and exit ramps), and there ;s no bike Lane or shoulder
from Hwy 36 to Larpenteur (40 MPH four-lane road with curbs). Addressing bikeway
needs in this corridor would require reconfiguration of motor vehicle lanes from 4 lanes
to 2 lanes (one each direction) and a center left turn lane with the addition of bicycle
lanes on each side.
Corridor 6 Jictoria: Needs designated bike lanes (striping).
Due to existing amenities present in corridors 1, 2, 4, and 6, we believe that the above
improvements can achieve a solid, workable framework for north-south bicycle transport
