I am applying for this conditional use permit as a proactive approach to protect the health
and well being of my spouse, my family and myself. As a long time resident of Little
Canada, I am very fond of the area and would like to remain living here. As I have
recently retired I naturally expect my mobility to decline even more as I age. It is my
intention to move all of the necessary functions (e.g. laundry, and larger walk in shower)
to one level so I will minimize the risk of accidents that may occur from using the stairs
etc. The most cost effective way in my opinion to accomplish this is to build out in my
existing attached garage space as the roof and outside walls are already in place. My
work would raise the floor up to the existing level of my home now and build out the
space.
Besides housing my vehicles and related equipment (e.g. lawnmowers, snowblower) I do
not have enough room to set up my woodworking equipment or work on any other
projects. By building the detached garage, I would have enough room to move my cars,
woodworking equipment, and related items away from the house and allow me to reduce
some clutter as well as the risk to my life and my family on the off chance that something
bad may occur. In the event that something did occur, there would be minimal risk to my
neighbors as their homes are not situated close to the proposed garage and the fire
department would still have the ability to get fire apparatus in close proximity to the
garage.
This proposed layout would also have minimal aesthetic impact on the community for a
number of reasons. First it would be built behind my home now and not really be seen by
passing traffic on Edgerton Street. Secondly it will be built along and behind an existing,
well-established tree line and outbuildings so it would be broken up to my neighbors to
the south. In addition my immediate neighbor to the north has their garage located behind
their home now and would not be distracted by a vehicle going into the new proposed
garage. Finally, this layout if approved would be over 1 SO feet from my neighbors to the
east and would be broken up some by the landscaping that they already have in place.
