AGENDA ITEM V G <br />STAFF ORIGINATOR Mary Kay Wyland/Alan Brixius <br />DATE May 5, 1995 <br />TOPIC PUBLIC HEARING, Flood Plain Ordinance <br />The Minnesota State Legislature has mandated that local government <br />units adopt regulations to minimize flood loses by updating or <br />adopting floodplain regulations. The Minnesota Department of <br />Natural Resources has provided a model ordinance for communities to <br />use as a guide in this process. <br />Attached for your information is a copy of our existing Floodplain <br />Management Ordinance which was adopted in 1988 and the draft <br />ordinance being proposed for adoption. This Ordinance is very <br />similar to the DNR model with few modifications. Changes from the <br />DNR Model will be outlined at the Planning & Zoning meeting. Some <br />of these changes relate to consistency with our Zoning Ordinance. <br />Staff has met with Tom Hovey, Area Hydrologist with the DNR, to <br />review our proposed ordinance. Although we do not have official <br />comment at this time, he appeared 'to be in agreement with our <br />recommendations: <br />1. Approve draft ordinance subject to final review and approval by <br />the DNR. <br />2. Continue Public Hearing pending final review and approval of <br />draft ordinance by DNR. <br />3. Return to staff for further consideration and reschedule Public <br />Hearing for later date. <br />Option 1 <br />
