City of Lino Lakes
Park Board Meeting
February 5, 1996
have been met. The new school will have three gymnasiums
and a possible community wellness area.
His initial impression is we are in very tight competition
with the Centennial Basketball Association for the use of
these areas. At this time we are pursuing the first prefer-
ence idea for at least one of these gymnasiums.
There are several sport elements in the outdoor site plan
some of which will help us and some of which are exclusively
school district. For example the track and field facility
would be fenced, controlled and maintained by the school
district.
The facility does offer .the city the opportunity to reassign
some'of our existing ballfields that we are presently using
for adults to youth uses, since we would have two adult (300
foot) fields next to each other in the new site. After
looking at the field reassignments youth could gain the use
of Lino Park and field number 3 at Rice Lake Elementary. We
would in effect gain one adult softball field to our system.
The multi -use athletic field on the southwest side of the
site would come out because of room and safety concerns in
relation to the freeway. The two hockey rinks on the plan
would probably become one with a free -skating area, and may
not be built initially. All of the athletic fields are
needed by the school district for their ownrprograms. The
legion field on the northeast corner of the site is being
built for community needs. Space is tight because of the
wetlands on the athletic complex site. In his opinion this
would be complementary to our needs.
A trail would loop through this facility and into a trail
down Elm Street and along a proposed road on Fourth Avenue
heading to the north linking into the regional park.
The joint useagreementlanguage writing is with the super-
intendents office. We do not have anything at this time.
The economic issues are clear to him (were short of money)
and he presented this to the superintendent. John McClellan
seemed optimistic that something could be worked out on this
and would be talking to Randy Schumacher. As you recall,
the city paid for the interior trails overlay and a portion
of the underpass at the Rice Lake Elementary School site.
5
