WS – Item 3

WORK SESSION STAFF REPORT
Work Session Item No. 3

Date: March 4, 2013

To: City Council

From: Jeff Karlson

Re: Blue Heron Days

Background

During the February 4 th work session, the Council discussed options for the planning and
coo rdination of Blue Heron Days.

I met with Park & Recreation staff to discuss how the City would continue to provide
staff resources to plan and coordinate Blue Heron Days. It was suggested that the City
hire an Assistant Recreation Supervisor for the su mmer to coordinate Blue Heron Days .
This position would also help supervise other summer recreation activities by filling in
hours that previously have been distributed to other summer staff.

This would be an 11 -week (June 3 through the third weekend in August), 40 -hour a week
position . The hours would be split between Blue Heron Days activities at $13.00 an hour
and other summer recreation activities (paid for through the Recreation Fund). The total
cost in staff time for Blue Heron Days activities wou ld be approximately $3,000. There
is no additional cost as the position w ould be fulfilling other duties previously assigned to
other summer staff.

Pub lic Services Director Rick DeGardner and Recreation Supervisor Tanya Mozingo
would oversee the tasks assigned to this position as well as coordinate all work pertaining
to Blue Heron Days prior to the June 3 start date.

Mary Alice Divine put together a list of activities that are involved with the Blue Heron
Days event.

Requested Council Direction

S taff is looking for Council approval to create this new summer position.
