Existing display cases <br />Existing fireplace and fireside seating <br />tl1111'•!:,y',1\ <br />Existing reception desk <br />Existing library <br />The Nature Center Building <br />The two level, 10,000 square foot Nature Center building was built in 1993, and <br />features two multi-purpose classrooms, a display area, a small library, staff office <br />space, fireside seating, preschool space, storage areas, a kitchen, and lunchroom/ <br />craft area. <br />Existing Conditions <br />• Arrival inside the building does not lead to a clear orientation or circulation <br />of the space <br />• The display area, including some animal mounts and display cases, feel <br />static and outdated <br />• The library feels private and visitors are not sure if it is a public space, <br />resulting in the underutilization of a great resource <br />• An overall lack of indoor/ outdoor relationship — no access to outside from <br />upper classrooms, limited number of windows, views to outside do not add <br />to natural experience <br />• Staff space is not fully separated from preschool area; noise from one area <br />travels to the other area easily <br />• Limited staff space restricts the flexibility to add staff members or have <br />more separated staff space <br />• Storage capacity does not fully meet program needs <br />• Aging building means that capital repairs will be needed in the near future <br />Needs <br />• Entrance needs distinction to attract visitors from the outside <br />• Orientation inside the building needs improvement <br />• Display area needs incorporation of sensory, interactive displays <br />• Library should be welcoming and comfortable <br />• Additional windows and attention to views from inside the building <br />• Reconfiguration of space to provide quiet, private space for staff <br />• Improved storage <br />• Full assessment of mechanical systems <br />26 Chapter 3: Existing Conditions & Needs <br />
