CITY COUNCIL
AGENDA ITEM 6 D

STAFF ORIGINATOR : Jason C. Wedel, City Engineer

MEETING DATE : May 13 , 20 12

TOPIC : Consider Resolution No. 13 -61 Ap proving Change Order No. 1,
Otter Lake Road Street and Utility Improvements

VOTE REQUIRED : 3/5 Vote Requ ired

BACKGROUND

At the March 11, 2013 meeting, City C ouncil awarded the Otter Lake Road Street and Utility
Improvements to Arnt Construction Company , Inc. Constr uction is anticipated to start this week.

After the Council awarded the contract for this project , City Staff discussed the proposed gate
valves that were to be installed on the 16 -inch trunk watermain. The original plans and
specifications included using butterfly style valves and boxes. These valves are common because
they are the least ex pensive. However, when it becomes necessary for the utility department to
work on the watermain, the butterfly valves can be difficult to close completely.

The alternative to the butterfly valve is a traditional gate valve and box. All of the City’s s maller
valves throughout the City are gate valves and they are more effective at closing completely. Based
on past experience, City staff would therefore like to include a change order to revise the valves
specified for the Otter Lake Road Street and Util ity Improvements.

This project has two 16 -inch valves. The cost per butterfly valve bid was $3,050 per valve. The
cost to go to a gate valve is an additional $5,390 per valve for a total cost of $8,440. The total
change order for modifying the two valv es is therefore $10,780.

Financing for this project as originally proposed is still sufficient with the proposed change order.
A breakdown of the construction cost is as follows:

Original Contract Amount $326,366.20
Change Order No. 1 $ 10,780.00
Total Construction Cost $337,146.20

Original Engineer’s Estimate $411,057.00

RECOMMENDATION

Approve Resolution 13 -61 , Ap proving Change Order No. 1, Otter Lake Road Improvements .

ATTACHMENTS

1. Resolution No. 13 -61
