Patrol sergeants have all the <br />responsibilities of patrol officers and are included in our staff minimums. Historically, <br />patrol sergeants were not incl uded in minimums so that they were available to be present <br />on calls and focus on supervision and administration. After the elimination of two patrol <br />positions in 2011 , sergeants had to be included in minimums and be primary responders <br />on calls in addition to their supervision and administrative duties. Sergeants are also <br />expected to participate i n crime prevention activities and traffic enforcement. In 2012, <br />patrol sergeants were the primary responding officer on 124 part 1 and par t 2 calls <br />(Anoka County Records ). Sergeants are also responsible for coordinating and <br />supervising a special project or volunteer group. Historically, the sergeants were <br />scheduled on a rotating shift of five days on with four days off with a 10 hour work day. <br />This allowed us t o assign two sergeants to a day power shift and two to a night power <br />shift. This provided maximum coverage with a day of overlap for administrative <br />purposes. Because of staffing shortages, the sergeants were moved to the same rotation <br />as officers so that they could more readily fill entire shifts as call cars. This change in <br />scheduling has resul ted in less supervisor coverage. <br /> <br />In addition to responding to calls for service and supervising patrol staff, some of the <br />a dditional duties of patrol sergeants a re: <br /> Coordination, documentation, and supervision of Police Explorers, Police <br />Reserves, and the CERT program <br /> Traffic safety grant coordination, scheduling, and supervision <br /> Tracking and coordinating state mandated training <br /> Squad/patrol equipment integratio n and tracking <br /> <br />Service Philosophy <br />The service philosophy of the Lino Lakes Police Department mirrors that of a private <br />sector customer service model.
