CITY COUNCIL <br />AGENDA ITEM 4B <br />STAFF ORIGINATOR: JohnSwenson, Chief of Police <br />MEETING DATE: September 9, 2013 <br />TOPIC: Contract for Service with Metro Bowhunters <br />Resource Base (MBRB) <br />VOTE REQUIRED:3/5 <br />INTRODUCTION <br />Staff has met and developed a contract for service with MBRB for deer management on City <br />owned properties for the Council consideration. <br />BACKGROUND: <br />During the September 24, 2012 Council Work Session, Council Member Roeser raised the issue <br />of deer management programs and the potentialto reduce deer/vehicle collisionsin Lino Lakes. <br />Staff presented a report on vehicle/deer collisionsat the November 5, 2012 work session and has <br />met with Anoka County Parks personnel regarding their hunting program in the Rice Creek <br />Chain of Lakes Park.Staff prepared 2013 Deer Management Update reportand presented it to <br />the Council at the August 5, 2013 Work Session. The 2013 Update outlined options the Council <br />may wish to consider. This contract for service with MBRB is part of this continuing effort. <br />MBRB primary mission is to provide a safe, efficient, and cost effective deer removal alternative <br />for urban deer management by means of a qualified and well-managed archery program. MBRB <br />has been involved with deer removal efforts and has been working closely with municipalities <br />and other governmental units in the seven county metropolitan area since 1995. MBRB has <br />successfully and safelyremoved over 2000 deer from the Twin Cities metropolitan area since the <br />organizations inception. MBRB does not charge for its service. All MBRB huntersare trained <br />and tested to ensure they are proficient. <br />Staff from the police department will work with MBRB Hunt Coordinator to ensure that all deer <br />management efforts on city property is done in a safe manner and within the requirements <br />outlined in City of Lino Lakesordinances. <br />If Council approves this contract for service with MBRB the follow are tentative dates: <br />September 16, 2013 –Orientation & Check-In Meeting <br />October 4 –6, 2013 –Archery Hunt <br />October 18–20, 2013 –Archery Hunt <br />November 1 –3, 2013 –Archery Hunt <br />November 15 –17, 2013 –Archery Hunt <br />January 10, 2014 –MBRB Summary Report <br /> <br />
