WS — Item 1
WORK SESSION STAFF REPORT
Work Session Item No. 1
Date: January 7, 2019
To: City Council
From: Michael Grochala, Community Development Director
Re: Birch Street (CSAH 34) proposed improvements
Background
Anoka County is planning improvements to Birch Street (County State Aid Highway 34)
to address deteriorating pavement conditions and safety concerns. The improvements are
proposed to be completed in two separate phases:
Phase 1 Mill and Overlay, from approximately Fawn Lane to Centerville Road
(Summer 2019)
Phase 2 Reconstruction, from Hokah to approximately Fawn Lane (Summer 2021)
The Birch Street Corridor Study, completed in 2010, proposed a four lane roadway from
Ware through West Shadow Lake Drive to accommodate existing and proposed traffic
volumes. The County is now considering a two lane roadway within this section.
Roundabouts are being evaluated to improve access at Rice Lake Elementary.
Representatives of the Anoka County Highway Department will be present to provide an
overview of proposed improvement projects, discuss the planning process and design
considerations. Anoka County is also meeting with the Centennial School District
regarding the improvements.
Requested Council Direction
None required. Discussion Only.
Attachments
None.
