April 1, 2019 TO : Park Board Members FROM : Kellie Schmidt, Public Services Administrative Assistant RE : Credit Card Processing Using Square The Public Services Department is excited to announce that we have the ability to accept credit cards at our events, and city hall counter, using the device "Square" . The City purchased the components to use Square for credit card processing in order to accept credit cards at events and at the Public Services window . It had come to our attention that many people , especially young people, do not carry cash and that we may be losing out on sales, or creating an inconvenience , at our events by not taking cards . Square allows us to use the already purchased , and on hand , City IPads to take credit card transactions at our event venues . The IPads are wireless, portable, and convenient . There is no monthly processing fee for Square , however there is a transaction services fee when credit cards are processed (this is a very minimal fee compared to previous fees we were paying ) . Prior to the Square, the City used a counter credit card processing machine to process credit card . The machine/company charged monthly fees for use of this machine ( whether transactions were made on it or not ) . It was determined that Activenet ( our online program registration system ) could handle 99 % of the credit card transactions that we were processing, and being that we paid the fee anyway for the services as it is our online registration system , it made sense to just use the computer as the Point of Sales processing center for the counter as well . The Square will allow us to process payments that Activenet is not setup to process, as well as, be versatile to use at any City event across any and all departments . The Square was first used at the 9th Annual Corn Roast in July . Although we did minimal transactions ( only $ 149 was done ) it was a great learning experience for our staff as we gear up for Blue Heron Days . It is our hope that the Square onsite processing capabilities will make it convenient for everyone to purchase what they want at our events without the worry about having to stop and get cash prior to the events ( it will also cut down on the amount of cash on hand and floating around at the event venue ) .
