CITY COUNCIL
AGENDA ITEM 3A

STAFF ORIGINATOR: Jeff Karlson

MEETING DATE: May 13, 2019

TOPIC: Resolution No. 19-47, Supporting Financial Contributions to
School Districts for Playground Structures

VOTE REQUIRED: 3/5

INTRODUCTION

The City Council is being asked to approve an updated resolution, which supports financial
contributions to school districts for playground structures.

BACKGROUND

Last May the City Council adopted a resolution in support of funding new playground
equipment on school district property with conditions. The resolution provided an annual
matching contribution from the City for up to $20,000.

Included on the May 13th agenda is a fund request from the Centennial School District for new
playground equipment at Rice Lake Elementary.

Staff recently found out that Lino Lakes Elementary (Forest Lake School District) would also
like to submit a fund request for new playground equipment. There was a question about
whether funds would be available this year for Lino Lakes Elementary. It is staff’s opinion that
Resolution No. 18-58, which was adopted last May, was intended to provide funding “not to
exceed $20,000 per year.”

Since the City may receive more than one funding request per year from the school districts,
staff revised last year’s resolution by including additional guidelines for future requests.

RECOMMENDATION

Staff is recommending approval of Resolution No. 19-47, Supporting Financial Contributions
to School Districts for Playground Structures.

ATTACHMENTS

Resolution No. 19-47
Resolution No. 18-58
