I look forward to receiving a map of the potential
areas.
I have enclosed some information that I thought you might find helpful in discussing options with
council members and staff. In particular, I included information about our finance program,
transaction services, and projects the Trust for Public Land has completed with local governments
in' the Midwest Region.
The Trust for Public Land (TPL)is a national, nonprofit land conservation organization which
assists individuals and communities in achieving their park and open space preservation goals.
TPL specializes in acquiring and preserving urban and rural open space for the benefit of the
general public. We do not own land permanently, but secure it for eventual transfer to local land
trusts or public land management agencies, from the local to the federal level. TPL adds land to
local, state and federal parks and forest systems.
The Trust for Public Land can handle details of the real estate transaction, provide assistance in
identifying and securing funding, coordinate funding sources, and help mobilize public support in
bond referendum campaigns. For example, one Twin Cities area project involved funding from as
many as ten sources, both private and public. Some have been two-step processes, in which TPL
purchases an entire parcel, a public agency then purchases part of the parcel, and TPL sells the
remainder to a developer who commits to developing in a manner compatible with the public open
space and sensitive to community interests. In addition, TPL focuses on those opportunities that
public agencies can not act quickly upon or that pose technical difficulties.
The Trust for Public Land
Midwest Region
420 North Fifth Street
Suite 865
Minneapolis,MN 55401
(612)338-8494
Fax(612)338-8467
Irl►
0'*M1
